The Sink

Of course, the darkroom is only as good as the sink.  With this in mind, I set out to build my own sink.  Simple enough, just some wood and fiberglass and then add the plumbing…

Unless you have totally lost your mind, or work in the boatbuilding industry this is a foolish act.  The first thought is that it will save money.  This is not so, and an ABS sink from B&H will cost about the same with less aggravation and a lot less itching and mess.  But if you must…

This sink is a full 8’ long by 28” deep.  The sink depth runs from 3-4”, giving it a 1” fall to an end double stainless bowl.

All components are attached with drywall screws and glued.  For all the top edges, the router was used to round off all the edges for easier fiberglass application, and comfort when working with the completed item.

In order for the water to drain correctly from the left hand side to the sink, the sink bowl was recessed by routing out a drop lip prior to cutting out the hole for the sink.

Fiberglass is the part that bumfuzzles most people, and is the nastiest, smelliest, messiest, and often the least cooperative part.  And don’t forget that there is only 30 minutes at the most working time per batch of resin before it turns to Jello.  Black coloring was added to the resin during the mixing process.

Then there is the trimming, sanding, recoating, and cleanup.  It only took a day to finish the fiberglass.  It took a month and a half to get it as the FedEx driver kept removing and sending back the resin to the shipper thinking that it was leaking.  The final cost was $35 over ordering, and I am still picking out fiberglass from my arms.  But by damn, I have the satisfaction of having done it myself.

What’s left but moving day?  Continued on the next page.
